And we’re back… Run report #16

After a week off cancelled due to the wild winter weather, we were happy and relieved to be back for the 16th Third Creek Greenway parkrun.

There was still a considerable chill in the air as 13 participants and ‘barkrunner’ Scout lined up to walk, jog or run 5k with us.

Event 15-02-2020

The cold was deeply disappointing for tourists Ian and Lisa who had travelled for a weekend away from Washington DC expecting warmer temperatures down south. Despite only being a few degrees warmer than their hometown, both managed the early start and we were delighted to have them join us for a post-parkrun breakfast to hear about their parkrunning experiences in the DC area. For anyone thinking of a visit themselves - the duo highly recommended Roosevelt Island parkrun.

Event 2020-02-15 2

With parts of the course more ice-rink than path, it was all the more credit to regulars Steven and Alex who both recorded personal bests along the course! We love seeing our community progressing towards their personal goals. Parkrun is all about taking part at your own pace and you’ll be supported all the way by the volunteers and your fellow participants.

Event 2020-02-15 3

Plus kudos to Roger for picking this as his first ever parkrun event - we hope to see you again in better temperatures… If you’re new to parkrun or you want to bring a friend, family member or colleague for their first event don’t forget to register for a personalized barcode

The mystery of the missing token

Our first-place finish token appears to have taken a trip away from our collection… If you’ve accidentally taken a finish token home please do return it to us!

A call for volunteers

Thanks to everyone who volunteered this week - especially Rebecca volunteering for the first time at Third Creek Greenway while her family skated ran.

We have a full roster for next week but need volunteers over the coming weeks. All the volunteer roles at Third Creek Greenway parkrun are easy, fun, and don’t require a lengthy commitment. You’ll get a briefing about roles at 8:45am and be on site until the tail walker has crossed the line.

If you’re a regular runner with us then we ask you to consider volunteering once every four-six weeks to help give back to the event.

If you’re interested in volunteering at a future event, please email thirdcreekgreenway@parkrun.com.

Into three figures… Run report #14

We hit a major milestone at event number 14 last Saturday as first-timers Carlene and Casey became the 100th and 101st individuals to walk, run or jog 5k on Third Creek Greenway!

Event 14 2020-01-25

Carlene and Casey were our only two first timers this week. With cold winds blowing down the greenway, it was 10 hardy souls who made it out.

Finishing first was David (and ‘barkrunner’ Scout) with incredible support from Max to help pace him to an extremely consistent time. Great to see the parkrun community spirit in action with runners supporting each other to progress.

There were personal bests for Nancy and for your regular report writer Joe, who wishes he’d slowed down a bit rather than knock nearly 50 seconds off in one huge leap...

A massive thanks to our volunteers this week, especially Kirk and Diane as our joint tail walkers - keeping each other company and cheering on fellow participants.

All the volunteer roles at Third Creek Greenway parkrun are easy, fun, and don’t require a lengthy commitment. You’ll get a briefing about roles at 8:45am and be on site until the tail walker has crossed the line.

A number of our usual team are unavailable for our events on February 1st and February 8th so we’d love to hear from you if you can help out on those dates. Please email thirdcreekgreenway@parkrun.com

First timers from near and far… Run Report #13

What do you do when you know you’re about to relocate thousands of miles to a new continent? Look for a new place to live? Check out the local amenities? Head straight to the parkrun events map to work out your nearest location?

If you’re a parkrunner then you’ll probably be doing all three! We certainly won’t judge in what order...

We were joined this week for the first time by the McConnell family, who arrived in Knoxville just two weeks ago from Australia. With over 100 parkrun events under their belt between the four of them, they were delighted to find a new purple dot on the parkrun USA map when Third Creek Greenway parkrun was established in October 2019. We’re so excited that the whole family can continue their parkrun journey here in Knoxville.

One of the best things about parkrun is that all the family can get involved together. There were plenty of high-fives at the finish line for junior Lucille who took part in her first 5k with mom Amelia and did a great job!

Event 2020-01-18

With six first-timers this week, the number of individuals completing Third Creek Greenway has reached 99! Who will be our 100th?

Our 13th event was not unlucky for Alex, Freya, and Nancy who all recorded course personal bests along Third Creek Greenway. And it was a first first-finish for core-team member David who, accompanied by ‘barkrunner’ Scout, knocked over 30 seconds off his previous course best which is incredible improvement.

A heartfelt thank you to all our volunteers this week - particularly Kirk and Heather doing a great job as joint Tail Walkers - keeping each other company and cheering on our participants. The Tail Walker is fast becoming our most coveted position but there are others that we need filling each week to help us run the event safely and record participants’ times and finish positions.

Volunteer roles at Third Creek Greenway parkrun are easy, fun, and don’t require a lengthy commitment. You’ll get a briefing about roles at 8:45am and be on site until the tail walker has crossed the line.

Should it be this humid in January? … Run report #12

The surprisingly warm temperatures for mid-January were the main topic of conversation as participants and volunteers lined up for the 12th parkrun on Third Creek Greenway.

Event 011420

The majority of our runners this week were returners, with just one first-timer - welcome to parkrun Sarah! We hope you enjoyed your first free, weekly timed 5k running with regular Rebecca and ‘barkrunner’ Pepper.

Event 14012020 3

Ron was first across the line for the second time at his second run with us. Showing incredible consistency, he’s recorded 18:38 and 18:39 on our course!

Sue returned to Third Creek Greenway parkrun as part of her spring marathon training and was first female finisher. Keep up the good work Sue!

Event 14012020 2

Ask what you can do for your parkrun...

A huge thank you to our volunteers this week, especially Nancy who parkrun volunteered for the first time!

Each week we need 4-5 volunteers to help us run the event safely and record participants’ times and finish positions. Volunteer roles at Third Creek Greenway parkrun are easy, fun, and don’t require a lengthy commitment. You’ll get a briefing about roles at 8:45am and be on site until the tail walker has crossed the line.

The one with the volunteers from far away… Run report #09

What activities do you do with your family to keep them occupied when they’re in town for the holidays? Why you sign them up to parkrun of course.

Your regular report writer Joe has his mom, dad and sister visiting for the week so naturally they were awoken early in the dark on Saturday morning to take part in their first parkrun.

Mom and dad took on volunteering roles while sister, Alex, was one of thirteen finishers along the Greenway for the last parkrun before Christmas.

2019-12-21

Both volunteers and runners were feeling festive!

2019-12-22-2

It was an excellent day for personal records - over half our participants setting a new course best! Congratulations guys - keep up the great work. A special shout out to Nancy for her third PR in a row - knocking over four minutes off since her first parkrun!

And we were joined by Martin, Anja and Kirk taking part in their first parkruns - welcome!

We need your help...

We are on the lookout for volunteers for the December 28th, January 4th and January 11th events as a number of the core team are away. Volunteer roles at Third Creek Greenway parkrun are easy, fun, need no prior experience and don’t require a lengthy commitment.

For December 28th we’re looking for someone to distribute finish tokens.

For January 4th we’re looking for someone to barcode scan. If you’re one of our faster finishers you could do this after running.

On January 11th we’re after a timekeeper, barcode scanner, finish tokens distributor, and a tail walker.

If you can help out please email us at thirdcreekgreenway@parkrun.com

Next week - it’s the last parkrun of 2019!

Don’t forget to register and don’t forget your barcode...

See you then!

Since launching on October 26 2019, Third Creek Greenway parkrun has had 86 individual finishers and had 20 individuals volunteering.

The one where it stopped raining just in time… Run Report #8

The forecast had been dire.

Wet and wintery conditions had blown into Knoxville on parkrun-eve (previously known as Friday) and had hung around until first light the following morning. This left your volunteer team on tenterhooks - would it pass in time for the eighth Third Creek Greenway parkrun?

The answer - to the relief of us all - was yes. With only about an hour to go, the rain stopped leaving slick but clear conditions for the participants, volunteers and ‘barkrunner’ Scout who took part.

2019-12-142019-12-14-2

We were excited to three welcome newcomers this week. Max was taking part in his first parkrun after volunteering last week while Sue and Laura joined to incorporate parkrun into their training. Our free, weekly and timed 5k event is a perfect way to track your progress against longer goals.

2019-12-14-3

Diane and Alex both showed they’re onto a winning streak - setting course personal records for the second week running!

2019-12-14-4

Meanwhile your regular run report writer Joe felt confident enough in his progress in returning from a knee problem to push himself and took over three minutes off his previous course record.

And Chris was our first finisher - despite missing the start! That’s impressive but wouldn’t recommend you make a habit of it…

2019-12-14-5

We couldn’t put on our events without volunteers so a huge thanks to our ‘high-vis heroes’, particularly Trinity who was volunteering for the first time.

We need your help...

On January 4th we’re after a timekeeper, finish tokens distributor and someone who could help set up signs on the course from 8am.

Next week - we’re getting into the holiday mood!

We are back next Saturday at 9am and because it’s the last run before Christmas, we’re going to be all festive! So dig out that Christmas jumper, tinsel, Santa hat or even any themed run tops to join us. As always though, all you need to participate in parkrun is yourself and your barcode.

The one with all the personal records… Run Report #7

There must have been something in the air on the crisp first Saturday of December as eight participants set personal records at the latest Third Creek Greenway parkrun!

2019-12-07 event

That’s the great thing about parkrun is that it’s just you against your own results. You can either take it comfortably or push yourself. Or in the case of Joe and Alex, accidentally push each-other because you’re too polite to admit to your fellow runner that this is not your usual pace...

2019-12-07 event2

Among our regular participants, impressive personal records were set by Nancy, Rebecca (with ‘barkrunner’ Pepper) and Stephen (plus ‘barkrunner’ Maisie).

2019-12-07 event3

And weeks after two Carson-Newman track stars set our course record of 17:09, P Mark knocked several minutes off his previous result to set the ‘Carson-Newman Faculty Record’!

2019-12-07 event4

Diane shaved four minutes from her previous time which kept tail walker Meredith on her toes! We suspect because she was on her way to a second 5k later that morning at Cruze Farm Dairies (a family tradition). We’d all run faster for ice-cream right?

2019-12-07 event5

We had just the one first timer this week but Ron made a huge impression - not only the first-finisher but clocking a time well under 20 minutes! What a great way to finish your first parkrun.

2019-12-07 event6

We love seeing you guys out each week enjoying yourself and making the most of Knoxville’s beautiful greenways. We couldn’t put on our events without volunteers so a huge thanks to our ‘high-vis heroes’  who created a wonderfully supportive atmosphere this weekend, particularly Max who was volunteering for the first time.

Stopping off for a parkrun… Run Report #6

If you’re driving from Illinois to South Carolina where’s a good place to stop for a break? Third Creek Greenway parkrun of course!

2019-11-30 event

The Holdcroft and Heck families were on this epic voyage and timed a break perfectly to stretch their legs along our free 5k. That’s the wonderful thing about parkrun - all ages can take part - as well as four-legged friends (provided they’re on a short leash).

And our course is perfect for running with strollers - it’s paved throughout with only a couple of bumpy places on the bridge.

IMG_7485

Among our regulars there were a flurry of personal bests. Setting new course records were Nancy E, Mary, William, and Nancy H - who was also first female finisher this week! Congratulations.

And it was a first first-finish for Jonathan on his 73rd parkrun!

Third Creek Greenway parkrun is put on by volunteers each week so a huge thanks to Sam, Heather and Rebecca who all volunteered for the first time this weekend!

Volunteer roles at Third Creek Greenway parkrun are easy, fun, and don’t require a lengthy commitment. You’ll get a briefing about roles at 8:45am and be on site until the Tail Walker has crossed the line.

We are on the lookout for a couple more volunteers for December 7 and December 14. Some roles can be combined with taking part in the run. Please email thirdcreekgreenway@parkrun.com to find out more.

Since launching on October 26 2019, Third Creek Greenway parkrun has had 78 individual finishers and had 16 individuals volunteering.

Let it Pour … Run Report #5

Third Creek Greenway’s fifth event proved to be only for the strong of heart. Seven finishers braved the constant rain and slick course. Puddles and umbrellas added new “scenery” to the course for all participants.

20191123_090706In spite of the weather, there are many performances to celebrate. Four dedicated newcomers came out for their first Third Creek event. These first timers included two athletes from Carson-Newman University, Jasper Wilson and Conal McCambridge, who absolutely shattered the previous course record. They arrived at the finish line in 17:09, with Jasper just edging out Conal by half a second. We hope to see them back for more time trials whenever their track schedule permits.

20191123_092414Karen Lloyd was this week’s female first finisher.. She traversed the 5k in 26:47. This was Karen’s first official parkrun at Third Creek Greenway, though she was one of our very first supporters from our start-up phase. It was great to see her out!

20191123_093356Alex Steward, one of our junior athletes, also ran a personal best of 32:34, cutting off nearly two and a half minutes from his previous time. His dad, Marcus Steward, supported him all the way to the line. parkrun is a great opportunity for families to run together.

20191123_093941Scout was our only barkrunner this week! Her human David Talmy, one of our core team, finished in 6th place at his 6th parkrun location.

20191123_093953On such a rainy day, we are extremely grateful to all of our volunteers who came out to make this possible. Please consider starting your Saturday morning by supporting your fellow walkers, joggers and runners. Volunteer roles at Third Creek Greenway parkrun are easy, fun, and don’t require a lengthy commitment. Typically you’ll get a briefing about roles at 8:45am and be on site until the Tail Walker has crossed the line. Drop us an email at thirdcreekgreenway@parkrun.com to find out more.

Since launching on October 26 2019, Third Creek Greenway parkrun has had 69 individual finishers and had 13 individuals volunteering.

We don’t have an extra event on Thanksgiving, but we’ll be back 9am on Saturday, November 30th to help you run off some of those leftovers… See you there!

Barkrunners aplenty… Run report #4

Dog-lovers could rejoice at Third Creek Greenway last Saturday morning as we were joined by a number of four-legged friends, raring to start their weekend with a 5k walk, jog or run.

DSC_1158

Dogs are warmly welcomed at Third Creek Greenway parkrun provided they are either on a short lead or a harness with a short lead, and extreme care is taken to avoid entanglements with other participants. It’s a wonderful way for owners and their pets to exercise and enjoy Knoxville’s greenways together.

barkrunners 2

Alongside the hounds - nineteen humans walked, jogged or ran last week’s parkrun 5k on Third Creek Greenway. We were really excited to be joined by a number of first timers - including the whole Steward family!

Steward family 1

Marcus, Sam, Alex and Charlotte all took part in the 5k while William bossed his first volunteer role of handing out finish tokens. Thanks guys for taking part!

Steward family 2

Among our participants were visitors from Philadelphia and from Santa Barbara, Ca. Holly - our visitor from California was even the first female finisher this week - congratulations!

Holly tourist

Regular Chris was our first male finisher for the third time!

2019-11-16 Chris
As much as we always celebrate our first finishers, the guiding ethos of parkrun is that it’s just you against the clock - whether your preferred pace is fast and furious or slow and steady. There were three personal bests for regulars last weekend - congratulations to Rebecca and Heather, seen here supported by an enthusiastic friend.

2019-11-16 Rebecca and Heather

Jonathan also recorded a personal best - and was captured on the course in his 50-event milestone t-shirt. Parkrun rewards commitment and Jonathan is working towards achieving his 100-event milestone t-shirt in 2020.

2019-11-16 Jonathan

Every parkruner has unique reasons for taking part and their own individual goals. Each week it’s a pleasure to meet and find out more about our participants. It’s a real upside for the small group of volunteers who give their time on a Saturday morning to help people enjoy Knoxville’s greenways at this stunning time of year.

2019-11-16 Greenway

Volunteering with us is easy, fun, requires no prior experience and is not a lengthy commitment. We ask volunteers to be on site at 8:45am for a quick briefing and to be available until the last finisher - the Tail Walker - crosses the line. If you can help please get in touch at thirdcreekgreenway@parkrun.com.

Since launching on October 26 2019, Third Creek Greenway parkrun has had 65 individual finishers and had 12 individuals volunteering.

If you enjoyed parkrun please join us again next week and bring along that friend or family member who “isn’t a runner” or says “I’m not fast enough”! Everyone is welcome at parkrun, and stay around for a breakfast or coffee after to catch up with acquaintances and make new connections. Sign up here one-time and for free

See you this Saturday at 9am on the Greenway!
