In this month's issue, Livonia parkrun celebrates number 100, parkrun books are in the works and you can contribute, we've some feedback from the field and a motivating parkrunner of the month feature.

In 2012 when this journey began, I envisioned a number of communities throughout the United States embracing the parkrun ethos and what parkrun brings to their community each Saturday morning. Certainly with fifteen cities reaching out to me back in early 2012 and the number now growing to over ninety, I anticipated securing a national sponsor would not be an easy task, however a like minded corporation would see value in parkrun usa considering the successful track record in eight other countries. While the lack of sponsor funding and support has presented a few obstacles, there is an end in sight. parkrun will continue to grow organically as the activation team in each community are ready and I look forward to sharing this growth with you over the next several months.

With parkruns in the United Kingdom, Poland, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, Denmark, Russia, New Zealand, where else can you experience a weekly 5k run with your friends from around the world in your own community?

in perfect synchronicity


As many of our parkrunners as how the results work and why they are available so quickly. Tom Williams, UK Country Manager has very eloquently described this process, which is normally very simple. Normally being the operative word!

'As each parkrunner crosses the finish line a volunteer records their time by a press of the button on a stopwatch and another volunteer hands them a finish token. The runner who records the first time receives position token one, the runner recording the second time receives position token two and so on. This should happen over and over again until the whole field are accounted for in perfect synchronicity and this is why it’s really important that you always take a token as you finish, and why you shouldn’t cross the finish line twice.'

To celebrate our tenth birthday of parkrun, we are compiling a coffee table photo book with images submitted by you, the parkrunner. To take part in this initiative we have placed a new icon on every parkrunner’s profile page (your link is available on the top right-hand column of this newsletter if reading this via email) which when clicked will take you to a web page allowing you to submit three images plus some text. The webpage will offer you some guidance of what categories of images and quality of photo we are looking for. You will only be allowed to submit three images, and one time only, so please be careful when choosing your contribution.

I am very excited about this project. It is the parkrunner and the parkrun volunteer who form the essence of what parkrun is all about and now is your chance to be immortalized in this historic book which will be available for purchase by Christmas. Proceeds from book sales will go towards the expansion of Junior parkruns.

The only consistent factor is the smiling faces of the volunteers and other runners and walkers of all ages and abilities who make Livonia parkrun a tremendous event offering everyone so many opportunities to become a special person to those in your community, your family and to better yourself not only physically, but just as important mentally and socially. Favourite volunteer role:  All the Roles are important and I am happy to fill in anywhere I am needed.

What do you do at parkruns:  I have run in the Park run and volunteered as a course marshal and helping at the finish line.

How has parkrun changed your running:  parkrun has helped me increase my endurance and speed on the 5K and it's an easy run to end the week after I have a week of training usually run 7 to 20 Miles/week during the running session

What do you like about parkrun:  I like the commendatory with all the regular participants. We encourage one another and share stories and outcomes of the various runs we have participated in. It is a great group of people of all ages. I like getting up on Saturday morning and run the 5K. It charges me up for the rest of the day.

Most memorable or funniest parkrun moment:  I think my funniest moment was when I was sprinting up to the finish line and the grass was extremely wet. I tripped and fall sliding about 10 or 15 feet past the finish line. I didn't hurt myself, just my pride.

More about Robert:  Two years ago, Robert could not run a mile, had trouble sleeping, battled hypertension and Type 2 diabetes, and was 30 pounds heavier. That all changed though when Robert met a chiropractor, who specialized in nutrition. Robert got his weekly ‘chiro adjustments’, began a walking program and changed his diet to a paleo/gluten-free one. Paleo prescribes a diet of just lean protein, healthy fat, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Dairy, grains, legumes, and refined and processed food are completely avoided. After two months, Robert slept better, started dropping weight, felt more energized and was eventually able to wean off all medications. The walking became somewhat boring though, so Robert began jogging/running and got into a routine of running 3 days per week and averaging 7 miles per day. In fact this month, Robert reached his 1000 mile run mark in 21 months! Robert was happy to achieve the 1000 mark as well as complete his 1st half marathon on October 5, Heroes on Hines. Pretty good for a diabetic who experiences painful feet and who is a newbie runner! Despite the hilly Hines course, Robert said his legs felt great and he was able to sprint the last 500 feet. You may spot Robert before a race, since he likes to do simple plyometric drills such as skipping. Robert had to re-learn skipping J, but firmly believes it gets his muscles firing. The compression socks and colorful Newton shoes also complete Robert’s run-look! Post-race though, Robert refuels with a protein shake and uses The Stick and Foam Roller to work out tight muscles. Now you may wonder if there is a marathon in Robert’s future… He says “no”. His near-term goal is to run more 10Ks like the upcoming Kona Chocolate Run and Wicked Halloween Run (both in Plymouth). His 2014 goal is to run a couple half marathons. Thank-you Robert for sharing your success story.

We ask every parkrunner to volunteer 3 times a year. When volunteering you receive the maximum number of points towards the yearly competition.

Children at parkrun

All children under 11 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Guardians must ensure that children place themselves appropriately so as to prevent a situation where they are being repeatedly overtaken at the start. This is to ensure the safety of your child.

parkrun USA Newsletter 7th March 2014

welcome to the newsletter


In this issue, it's been an interesting few weeks weather-wise, parkrun Russia launches and I pontificate about parkrun, a few feedback from the field comments and we celebrate our parkrunner of the month.

Since November, I am sure you'll agree this winter has been a challenge with the relentless snow, ice, rain and cold. We've even learned a new winter term 'Polar Vortex'. While the weather has been less than desirable it has not dampened participating in parkrun events this winter. It takes a special kind of person to get up early on a Saturday morning in such conditions and come out to parkrun to run, walk or volunteer… Very, Very special!

parkrun offers everyone so many opportunities to become a special person to those in your community and to better yourself not only physically, but as important mentally and socially. Those new and somewhat reluctant parkrunners, having completed many a parkrun are now chasing new parkrun PRs, and those with just a bit more a few more years of experience are now transitioning their running to a new level competing in road races of all distances, cross country and track meets, swimming events in murky rivers, lakes, private and public pool clubs, and competing in triathlons. I've also had the amazing opportunity to run with my wife Lori, my nieces Olivia and Elizabeth, and my sons Drew, Alex and Adam. I have made new friendships with parkrunners and event managers from around the world. At the prompting of Livonia parkrun regular and ultra marathon standout Lynn Boven, I am even considering competing my first 50k trail race later this year. With the extreme snow, ice and cold I have canceled several Livonia parkruns due to the unsafe conditions. I have heard from a number of Livonia parkrunner's who are not shy about expressing their feeling of loss on those Saturday mornings. Even though parkrun may have been canceled they still meet for coffee and communicate an open invite to the parkrun community. My wife Lori and I have even been elected as race directors for a very popular local 5k road race later this spring. Without having parkrun in my life, I very much doubt I'd have experienced any of this.

I've made lots and lots of friends (and a few more friendly rivals). Twenty-fourteen looks set to be an even better year and parkrun USA will continue to be the catalyst for everything I plan to achieve… and I’m sure I won’t be the only one!

I want to share with you a commentary from Mr. Mark Thompson, Braunstone parkrun Run Director and parkrun UK Ambassador which appeared in the most recent parkrun UK newsletter. I am certain this rings familiar with many of you.

"While I’ve have a Facebook account, between Sunday and Friday I can very much take it or leave it. People living out every minute of their life, the same videos and jokes shared, and then getting hit by adverts for things that Facebook have decided I must want!

But on a Saturday, everything changes. Facebook suddenly comes alive! 95% of my news feed is stories about parkrun. Happy and inspiring stories. I feel like I know people that I have never met and love places that I have never been. I’m sure people will have had days where they feel a bit flat after parkrun, bad weather maybe, a bad run or volunteering challenges to overcome. If that does happen, then I urge you to look at Facebook, Twitter or parkrun event various Run Reports for a selection of positive stories from parkrun events. I’m sure that within minutes you will have found a story of happiness and inspiration that reminds you what a great community we are all part of. There is a theory that only bad news spreads quickly. I would suggest that parkrun day is proof that this isn’t the case and that great and positive news can spread just as quickly, if not more so!"

What do you like about parkrun:  So many things! It's a fun time, friendly folks, free. I like that it happens every week. It's a great motivator to have something scheduled, particularly on those rainy or really cold days.

parkrun USA Newsletter 30th December 2013

welcome to the newsletter


In this month’s newsletter Wood Creek Elementary School Woodchucks running at Livonia parkrun; Clermont Waterfront adds a Christmas Day parkrun we welcome 2014 and share some we've some amazing feedback from the field, and we welcome in 2014.

As we near the end of 2013, I am sitting in my living room reflecting upon the success parkrun USA has achieved despite no sponsor support and general lack of interest from corporate America. 2013 saw the launch of successful parkrun events in Clermont, FL and Durham, NC. parkrun USA also saw the first 50 and 10 club parkrun participation awards to Jennifer Greve and Alexander Brauer, both from Livonia parkrun. I fully anticipate several more 10 and 50 parkrun club awards in 2014 including Clermont and Durham.

As parkrun USA continues to grow, it becomes clearer and clearer that we are really more about community engagement than running, which although sounds odd for a running event and somewhat unintentional, is absolutely the case. Many parkrunners could or would run anyway, lots wouldn’t and I know there are thousands of amazing stories where we’ve been the difference between someone running or not but when I see the real differences we make to people’s lives it’s almost always about friendship and support through the creation of small but perfectly formed parkrun communities. Mr. Paul Sinton-Hewitt, Founder and CEO of parkrun was spot on with his comment of how life-changing parkrun will become to me, my family, the volunteers and those of you who join us every Saturday morning. It is my goal to see parkrun USA replicate the growth and sense of community enjoyed in the nine other parkrun countries. Here's a little something to keep you motivated over the winter months and to introduce one of your running / walking mates to the wonderful experience that is parkrun!

November 23rd saw Coach Charlie Garnett and the Wood Creek Elementary School Running Club venture out for their first parkrun experience. And what an experience it turned out to be as parkrunners were greeted with a sleet storm which quickly changed into a fast moving snow squall with blowing winds. Everyone looked forward to the hot chocolate and coffee after.

Clermont Waterfront parkrun Christmas Day 2013 prediction run

Clermont Waterfront parkrun has followed the parkrun UK tradition of adding a Christmas Day parkrun to their event calendar. A nice turnout for a brisk 5k run before heading home to enjoy Christmas treats. Special thanks to Toni Richardson and Jason Coulter for taking the times and calculating the results which allowed the rest of us to run. Not surprisingly we had no juniors today or overseas visitors and well done those who went to midnight mass and still managed to turn up at 7:30. A really nice event with Karl Riecken not only being the fastest but predicting his time better the rest of us. Karl predicted 18:00 flat and finished in a time of 18:22.

Durham, NC parkrun last Saturday before Christmas run

What a morning for a run! Not too cloudy, not too sunny, not too cold, not too hot: 54°F and great conditions for a new course record...

Congratulations go to Fred for being a first time Durham, NC parkrunner, for being first across the line, and for doing so in a faster time than anyone else has yet at Durham, NC parkrun with a time of 16:37; well done! Other first-timers included Larc, Michael, and Ben, though all have experienced parkrun overseas and already know the joys of a 5k with a lovely group of people. In other happy news, Kelly, Will, and Zoe all bagged new PRs, making it a nice day to smash some records. Now, on to the rest of the stats:

Men's placings:
Fred WARD (SM20-24) (Unattached) was first over the line in 16:37 - first appearance.
Larc WARD (SM20-24) (Unattached) was second over the line in 17:34.
Barton BECHARD (VM45-49) of Carolina Godiva Track Club, was third over the line in 18:12 - has been first to finish on 5 previous occasions.

Women's placings:
Kelly JONES (SW30-34) (Unattached) was first (8th overall) over the line in 24:50 - second time in 6 appearances.
Zoe PILLINGER (VW35-39) (Unattached) was second (13th overall) over the line in 28:22.
Gerty Cori WARD (VW50-54) (Unattached) was third (14th overall) over the line in 30:40.

"Two weeks ago I ran my first ever parkrun at Ginninderra. My son had run two previously and was excited for me to join him. I had no idea what to expect since, these days, I only run 1-2 races (mostly 5 & 10K) a year. After running on Nov 23 and thinking about the event and the series ever since, I can honestly say that parkrun is the best thing that has happened to the running movement in decades, possibly ever. I sincerely hope it becomes more and more popular around the world and Australia. The stats seem to indicate that anyway. Most of the time I run by myself or in small group, 3-4 times a week, purely as a lifestyle choice. I basically stopped running races a few years ago for many reasons, but mainly because they take up too much time (hours for a 25 minute run), usually a pain in the bum to commute to and from, too much focus on bling and elite runners and too many newbie runners complaining about everything from cotton count in the t-shirts, to weakness of the sports drink, to age awards not going deep enough. parkrun is exactly the opposite to all of this hype. You show up 5 minutes before the start, you chat with a few others, you stretch (maybe) and then you run. The organizers only show up 30 minutes before the start and they all know exactly what to do. Finally you get your time, chat some more, have a coffee if you want, and go home. An hour later the results are posted and within 24 hours you receive an email with more running stats about your performance than any of the glamour events ever give you, and all for free. How good is that? What is even better is that newbie's are given a special cheer, disabled runners are encouraged, kids, strollers and dogs are even welcomed and it’s all on a trail or track, so no fear of encountering your typical angry motorist running 5 seconds late for a fast food pig out. The kid factor is wonderful. There are not enough regular distance events for kids in Australia. Clubs do offer some activities but clubs can be intimidating and only cover a tiny percentage of the population. A child can be introduced to a 5km (foundation distance for all distance races both on and off roads) in a non-intimidating format, run with their parents or guardian, so as to be encouraged along the whole distance. They are not crushed in the rush and receive great accolades when they finish. They can repeat this experience every week anywhere in the country and get used to the whole experience of a race including the feeling of discomfort at the half way mark. After doing this a few times they soon learn the hurt disappears as they get closer to the finish line. I have run marathons (including the Boston Marathon), I have started a running club in USA, started a 5km/10km event which grew to 3000 participants after ten years, and ran the City to Surf about 20+ times. I started a running web portal in USA in 1995 which grew to 300,000+ subscribers (coolrunning.com) and all of this is great and good for bragging rights, but I’m more excited about parkrun than any of this. I wish the series the very best and hope to participate in the Ginninderra event every time I’m in Canberra as well as the Bulli event. I might even consider starting up one in Picton if we can find the critical mass. Cheers and great job!"

Volunteering at parkrun

We ask every parkrunner to volunteer 3 times a year. When volunteering you receive the maximum number of points towards the yearly competition.

Children at parkrun

All children under 11 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Guardians must ensure that children place themselves appropriately so as to prevent a situation where they are being repeatedly overtaken at the start. This is to ensure the safety of your child.
