CANCELLED: Durham, NC parkrun on September 15

Due to Hurricane Florence and the forecasts for heavy rain, very strong winds, and downed trees and other storm debris, the safest plan seems to be cancelling this Saturday's parkrun. Please spread the word to parkrunners who you know are not on Facebook, and feel free to post this notification to any and all social media that you use.

Please check back before our September 22 event for updates on trail conditions. Be safe, friends!

Upcoming events and a cancellation

Mark your calendars and spread the word:

  • May 30, 2015 - No parkrun. We'll be supporting local sponsors Bull City Running Co. at their annual Running of the Bulls 8k.
  • June 6, 2015 - It's our 100th parkrun here in Durham! Come join us for the celebration.
  • June 27, 2015 - Another celebration?! Why not? On this date, we'll celebrate our second anniversary with our annual awards and fun prizes. Plan to bring something for breakfast to share.

February 21, 2015 cancellation report

Yesterday's parkrun may have been cancelled, but we can't let it pass without thanking our volunteers and runners for their help. First and foremost, thanks a million to Tom Griffin for going out to the course and giving it a good look before reporting back on the conditions, complete with photos. Thanks also go to Bill Harris for helping us track down a few of the non-Facebook-using regulars so we can alert them to the cancellation. Next, a big thank you to Chris Gould for trotting down to the start yesterday morning to alert anyone who may have shown up that the event was cancelled. And while we're sad that he may have wasted his time, it was good to know that word got out through other sources and no one showed up, expecting a fun and free 5k.

Special thanks go to the Carolina Godiva Track Club and all the Facebook parkrunners who were happy to take the news delivered on Friday evening and spread it throughout their social networks. It may sound strange to say, but we're so pleased that this first ever cancellation was a success! That said, let's hope that we never need to test our cancellation procedures again.

We'll see you again next week!

Happy running,

Julie & Martin #dfyb

It's just over a week until our 1st anniversary, and all of Durham and the Triangle are invited to join us! Register online at if you haven't already, print your barcode, and join us at 8:00AM on Saturday, June 28 (or any other Saturday - we're always there) to mark 1 year of parkrun in Durham.

We're bringing and sharing for our celebrations, so be sure to bring a little something for breakfast after the run to share with others. Also, bring a friend so you can share parkrun with them.

Bull City Running Co. will be on hand to start the run, and they'll be bringing a cooler of Nuun with them. There will also be a few surprises in store, so it's worth the early start to the day.

We'll see you then, and #DFYB (don't forget your barcode).

Anniversary bring-and-share event on June 28, 2014

Our 50th event in Durham is coming up on June 7, so that means that our 1-year anniversary can't be long after that! On June 28, we will mark a year of parkrun in Durham with a run (naturally) and a bring-and-share breakfast afterwards. It's all very simple: bring a dish/some fruit/a box of doughnuts, and share them with the other runners and volunteers.

But like any good party, the more the merrier. So the second part of our bring-and-share is that we're asking all of our runners to bring a NEW runner to share parkrun with.

Bring some food, bring a friend, and we'll supply the run! Email for questions, and we'll see you then. #DFYB

Durham, NC parkrun still taking place during trail repairs

Durham Parks & Rec announced today that Third Fork Creek Trail will be closed for repairs until further notice.  This will not effect Durham, NC parkrun, which will still continue as scheduled every Saturday morning at 8:00AM from Southern Boundaries Park.  We've altered the route of the course, and runners should find it to be almost as good - though perhaps not quite as scenic! - as the regular route.  A word of warning: it's going to be more challenging than the regular route, so runners will have to work that little bit harder for a PR!

We're pleased that the repairs to the trail won't impact us, so we hope to see lots of people coming out to enjoy Durham, NC parkrun while the trail gets some much needed repairs.  And #DFYB! (Don't forget your barcode.)
