Durham, NC parkrun Event #136 – February 20, 2016

It was a big day at parkrun today as we saw first-time Durham, NC parkrunner Gavin Finlay set a new course record of 16:33, just 2 seconds faster than the previous record held since 2014 by Fred Ward. Well done, Gavin!

Congratulations are also in order for Cameron Kelly on the occasion of his 10th run - that's a big deal for these young parkrunners - and his 5th PR, which he earned by besting his last PR by more than a minute! Cameron worked really hard to get here, and we look forward to many more runs with him.

There was something in the air this morning that made many run a bit faster. It could be the hint of spring, or it could be that it was a full 18°F warmer than it was last Saturday and felt positively balmy at 47°F. Besides Cameron Kelly's PR, others with new personal records were Rebeca Cabrera, Kim Cerillo (and on her second ever parkrun!), Pete Rubinas, Anne Vail (a PR after so many runs - 58 in total - is something to cherish), Chris Walker, and Richard Weinberg. Congratulations to these 7 brilliant runners and to all those who may not have set a personal record but still achieved what they set out to this morning.

Record-setter Gavin Finlay was one of our newbies. Also running with us for the first time was Jim Cunningham. Welcome, guys, and we hope you'll both be back!

Durham, NC parkrun Event #116 – September 26, 2015

The worst of the rain held off for the 30 runners who ignored the gray skies and turned up to run 5k with us this morning. It was a three-looper this morning, owing to all of the rain yesterday. But neither that nor a persistent mist could dampen the parkrun spirit this morning.

Our sole registered newbie today was Mark Pocock, though this tourist from Eastleigh in the south of England is no stranger to parkrun, having now completed a total of 148 runs at 9 events between the US and the UK, in addition to a vast number of times volunteering at parkrun instead of running. Thanks for joining us this morning!

Three loops in Durham means having to fight your way up that hill three times and leads to the perception that it will be a no-PR kind of day. Four runners didn't get that memo and blazed their way through the drizzle towards a PR. Congratulations to Will Ericson and Angela Schira for both achieving their second PR in two weeks; Brandi Martin on the occasion of her second PR; and Daniel Susann, who earned his first PR and is now just one finish away from being the second Durham, NC under-18 to earn his milestone shirt for 10 runs. Well done to all of you!

Thank you to our hardworking, parkrun-loving volunteers this week: Gordon Keeler on pre-run setup, Julie Messina on timer and run reporting, Martin Warters on barcodes and scanning, and William Schmitz on weather. What a team!

Durham, NC parkrun Event #113 – September 5, 2015

Everyone thought that the weather was feeling a bit cooler, but I tried to warn them at the starting line: it's muggier than you think. Lo and behold, the end of the first of the two laps saw a lot of men removing their shirts and a lot of women wishing that it was socially acceptable for them to do so, too. Surely it can't last too much longer! With overcast skies, a temperature of 70°, and a dew point of 69°, it could have been worse, but it sure could be better...

Weather aside, this morning was fabulous! We welcomed three newbies: Elena Bradley, Mark Hambleton, and Angela Schira. Great to see you, and we hope you come back again soon. Beside three new folks, we also had three runners hit PRs. Congratulations are due to Damarius Hayes, Brandi Martin, and Elena Popowitch. Congrats on your achievement, and keep on running from this muggy summer and straight into a lovely and cool autumn.

Also deserving of a big round of applause is our lovely volunteers from this morning. Thanks very much to Janet Cromer, Julie Messina, William Schmitz, Martin Warters, and Carlos Webb. To put it in ways that people from all generations can understand: you're hepcats, groovy, totally awesome, da bomb, on fleek (not sure about that last one, but all those crazy kids keep using it on social media and I'm trying to fit in).
