Clermont Waterfront parkrun – Event 330 – 7 March 2020

The celebration of international women’s day on Sunday closely coincided with this weekend’s parkrun event. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of women in all areas of life, including female participation in running. Run directors Rissie Theiler and Anne McFarlane gave a few words about women’s empowerment across everything from economic, political, social, to cultural scenes throughout history. A historical moment for women in the sport of running that was mentioned at this Saturdays parkrun happened in 1967 when Katherine Switzer became the first ever women to run the Boston Marathon. Despite race officials physically trying to hold her back, she completed the race and paved the way for millions of other female runners to go on and accomplish their goals.

We had a large number of participants and first timers this weekend. There were just under 30 new parkrunners, and 140 people in attendance overall. We enjoyed having a big group of women from the South Lake Hospital and the Wellness center come out for the first time as well.   15 people got new personal bests.

Congratulations to young runner Michaela Appleton on finishing as the first female this weekend. At only 10 years old, she ran a new PB of 23:47. Another shout-out goes to David Harmon. David reached their 25th volunteer milestone together this weekend.  He has volunteered with parkrun Clermont since all the way back in 2016 along with his wife, Carolyn. Thanks David, and thanks to all the other volunteers for this week!

The event was made possible by 15 volunteers:

Rissie THIELER • Kendyl CARDWELL • Anne MCFARLANE • Butch HOLT • Carolyn HARMON • David HARMON • Kay MELVIN-BARNES • Amanda FURROW • John HIRSCH • Thomas O'DONNELL • Sandra FLORA • Ed FLORA • Craig PETRICK • Scott BLAIR • Joan DUGGAR

Clermont Waterfront Parkrun-2-29-20 #329

Clermont Waterfront parkrun

Event number 329

29th February 2020

Participants were lucky to have perfect running temperatures and a beautiful clear morning as they faced the start line this weekend at the Clermont waterfront park run. Many new participants also got to enjoy the great atmosphere. We were happy to have a group from Ocoee Elementary come out for the first time. It is always exciting to meet new park runners, and to watch young kids like those from the Ocoee elementary getting involved with the sport. This week 120 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 23 were first timers and 20 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 16 different clubs took part.

Congratulations to local park runner Libby Brouwer on completing her 50th event. She recently ran a PB of 32:00, and seems to be nearing that time again. Although overseas visitor Sarah Aldridge did not reach a milestone this weekend, it is worth shouting out her impressive total of 551 events. She has been participating in events since 2010, an extremely respectable commitment. This also goes to show the established history that park run has created over in England. Here at Clermont park run, we hope to encourage the spread of other events in the US (and offer a welcoming familiar environment for European visitors). Hopefully someday our Clermont participants will reach 500 events too!

Clermont Waterfront parkrun Event number 328 22nd February 2020

Perfect conditions and great spirit brought in lots of new personal bests and
strong results this weekend at the Clermont Waterfront parkrun. Participants faced a freshly added challenge on the course, though. The course is now shifted slightly to the side near the 1.5 mile mark, now including a very short (and very steep) hill. The hill has no real impact on times, but we can’t officially call the course "pancake flat" anymore! There were 23 personal bests and 21 first timers out of the 113 in attendance. We were also happy to have the Swim Like a Pro Triathlon group in attendance.

We were able to celebrate lots of first milestones this weekend. Caroline Whitehouse,
Tom Dyer, and Janine Campbell all completed their 25th event this weekend.
Congratulations to Tim Strickler on completing his 50th event this weekend.

Lee Rantala finished first overall in a new PB of 17:26. He also led 5 other men to sub
20 times. On the female side, new parkrunner Sara McClarty came in at 23:01 as the first female finisher in only her second event. Congratulations to Angela Harman, who was second female with a new PB. Angela has come out to multiple events each year since 2013. Her time of 23:31 this Saturday was her fastest since 2014! Junior runner Jocelyn Lee rounded out the top three females with a PB of 24:49.

The event was made possible by 13 volunteers:

Rissie THIELER • Kimberly GROGAN • Kendyl CARDWELL • Josh CASTLEMAN •
Harry BARNES • Luiz PRESTES • Helen PRESTES • Glenn ROBERTSON • Shane
HILL • Ron MITCHELL • Tom EAST • Bill STUCKEY • Justin PLANINZ

Clermont Waterfront parkrun – Event number 327 – 15th February 2020

With a conflicting ultra event at waterfront park, the Clermont parkrun was moved to the trail this past Saturday.  The trail always slows times down a little bit, but the beautiful paths through Hiawatha Park make for an enjoyable change of pace. The temperature was perfect, at right around 60, and the surface was in great condition. This week 131 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 22 were first timers and 7 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 15 different clubs took part.

We had a lot of major milestones to celebrate this weekend. First was Carolyn Harmon, who completed her 150th event. In addition to being a frequent runner, she also volunteers regularly and is a valued member of the Clermont parkrun community. Overseas visitor Eleanor Anne Martin did not just finish her 100th event, but she finished it in style with a new Clermont Parkrun PB of 28:45! She has come to this event 6 times from the UK, her first back in 2017. Junior Ray Butcher, also from overseas completed his 50th event here in Clermont.

The event was made possible by 15 volunteers:

Kimberly GROGAN • Kendyl CARDWELL • Hector CLEMENTE • Josh CASTLEMAN • Sharon GALLANT • Andy PIERCE • Jim PICKERING • Harry BARNES • Shane HILL • Kay MELVIN-BARNES • Dottie HARDING • Judy RICHARZ • Ron MITCHELL • Chris SEYMOUR • Sherry KELLER

Clermont Waterfront parkrun Event number 326 February 8th 2020

Due to other local activities, including the Clay Road 5k/10k/Duathlon, a lower than average attendance was recorded this weekend. Despite the conflicts, the Clermont Waterfront parkrun still had close to 100 participants. Those who competed were met with chilly temperatures and some difficult wind, but over 15 achieved a PB. In total this week 98 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 17 were first timers and 15 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 12 different clubs took part.

Our beloved overseas visitors ruled both the men’s and the women’s podium this weekend. William Law and Lorna Castle, both from Royston Runners, finished in fantastic times of 19:26 and 22:07. Congratulations as well to Robert Rosser, only a junior athlete, on completing his 20th event. We are also still enjoying the company of one of our Clermont parkrun founders Karen Bowler.

The cold and windy weather didn’t make for the most enjoyable volunteering conditions, but all the 15 volunteers showed the same dedication and enthusiasm as always. We always appreciate the help from volunteers, but we also know everyone also has some individual running goals as well.

One particular volunteer from this week who has been a dedicated member of the parkrun community and who has also tried to fit in volunteering is Tom Smith.   Tom first began attending parkrun in 2016, and starting coming out almost every weekend by 2018. His consistent commitment has brought a steady stream of PB’s throughout the years, with his most recent time clocking in a 20:36 (a 7 minute improvement since his first race!).  More than just his attendance, the parkrun community values Tom’s enthusiasm and support for fellow runners. Part time run director Rissie Thieler said Tom is constantly smiling and offering genuine words of enthusiasm to everyone, calling him “a perfect example of what parkrun represents.” He recently volunteered this weekend as a marshal. Tom is just one example of the many amazing participants and volunteers who make this event possible.

The event was made possible by 15 volunteers:

Bill POST • Frances POST • Kendyl CARDWELL • Grant MOLLETT • Hector CLEMENTE • Harry BARNES • Daniel WHITEHOUSE • Kay MELVIN-BARNES • Tom SMITH • Ron MITCHELL • Brenda EAST • Jeffrey SCHENCK • Zora SCHENCK • Jeff LOTTER • Robert BUTCHER
