Run Report #55

Run #55 and the Mighty Anacostia welcomed 47 attendees (record is 53).

Just a few nuggets:

We have a new course record for women! Chris Burbach set a new women’s record of 19:27 on her first parkrun ever!

Nine people joined us for their very first parkrun! Some were preparing for the Cherry Blossom Run, there was the grandson who crushed the course at 10 years old. Some were just curious about parkrun and others came with their parkrun fan friends.

Our furthest tourist (and first time parkrunner) came all the way from Iowa just to join us (she might have been here for something else, but hey, we all know tourists who travel just to parkrun somewhere new don’t we)?

We welcomed tourists from Roosevelt Island, College Park, Leakin Park and I think Kensington.

Eight people crushed their own records and set new personal bests.

But as always, the best people are our volunteers without whom parkrun Anacostia could not happen. Big shout out to our newest volunteers - Judy our photographer and Andrew who handed out the tokens. If you ever want to join this amazing group we have Volunteer Training every Saturday at 8:45 (and it is free).

As always, we hope to see you next Saturday for your free timed 5K along the Mighty Anacostia!

Run Report for Run #54

Twenty-eight people ran, jogged, and walked down the Mighty Anacostia. We welcomed 10 first timers and had 6 Personal Bests!
We look forward to seeing everyone again this coming Saturday.

Anacostia parkrun canceled for Saturday, May 19

Anacostia parkrun is canceled for Saturday, May 19. River flooding along the course is expected as a result of heavy rains throughout this week and extending into the weekend - NPS will be closing the park. The next Anacostia parkrun will take place on Saturday, May 26, as scheduled.

Anacostia parkrun #24

We’ve finally found our way into some consistently nice weather! Saturday morning was perfect for a run along the Anacostia River, with the Teens Run DC team hosting once again. Thirty-four parkrunners were in attendance, including 13 first-timers and a lovely group of runners from the UK!

Special thanks to first-time volunteer Rune Horvik, who helped with course set-up, breakdown, and finish tokens, and congratulations to the 12 runners who claimed PB times on this course!

A reminder that there will be no Anacostia parkrun held next Saturday, May 12, as Teens Run DC will be hosting their 3rd annual Mentoring Matters 5K event in Anacostia Park (it’s not too late to register: visit TRDC looks forward to hosting again on the following Saturday, May 19, along with their community of youth runners and volunteers - we look forward to seeing you then!

Run Report for April 21st – Anacostia parkrun #22

What a beautiful morning it was last Saturday!

Not only were almost 20 parkrunners and volunteers out on the Riverwalk, but we were surprised to discover a 5K race taking place on Anacostia Drive and enthusiastic Earth Day volunteers working to make the park even cleaner after last week's trash gathering that our own Tyrone Cook and Scott helped out at.

It really was a perfect morning for running, with cool temperatures and only a gentle breeze to remind us of the river.

Thelma D. Jones was back with her group, including her grandson Seneca, who again helped out by handing out the finish tokens.

And several parkrunners took advantage of the conditions to achieve personal bests (PB's). Kevin Abernathy visited from the NoVA running club to break 18 minutes.

And we had several tourists from much farther away:  James Gaule came from Ireland to do his fastest parkrun among his 24 completed so far. And Nancy Stuart and Ruth Thomas came from England to do their first parkruns in the U.S.

We also had three local ladies complete their first parkruns ever: welcome to the parkrun family Fran Thomas, Margaret Nixon and Toni Douglas!

The award for most runs among our regulars goes to Nakia McFarlane, who completed her 14th, followed by Kit Arrington who did her 8th. And Shannon Firth was back to complete her 4th.

We hope to see all of our regular parkrunners back this coming Saturday, including Shirley who promises to resume her Saturday parkrun routine.  :)

Tyrone will be your host this Saturday - come out and enjoy the parkrun community in Anacostia!

Anacostia parkrun #11

Teens Run DC hosted parkrun for the third time on Saturday, 1/27, with 47 parkrunners in attendance, including 20 Anacostia first-timers and 17 completing their first ever parkrun! We also welcomed our first TRDC canine participant, Penny, who served as an exceptional tail walker.

There was a great showing of volunteer support at Saturday’s run and we really appreciate everyone who helped make this event happen. Thank you to Alee Wade, Alex Bureau, Dave Heerema, Ben Meyer, and Steve Hocker, for taking on a variety of volunteer roles; special thanks to long-time TRDC community member, Chauncy Minor, who handled the finish tokens like a champ.

Congrats to Rune Horvik, Sean Dixon, Tony Nelson, Nadia Grenier, and Anita Handy on achieving new personal best times! Jennifer Flather, consistent parkrun attendee and frequent volunteer, also ran a PB at 43:24. Jennifer has participated in 8 of the 11 Anacostia parkruns held thus far and it has been great to see more and more “Anacostia regulars” showing up from week to week!

While Saturday’s temperature was ideal for running, the wind played a larger role than usual, as reported by several parkrun finishers. Congrats to first finisher Andrew Evans, who completed the course in a speedy 19:02, despite the significant headwind faced on the return trip.

Thanks again to all of the volunteers and parkrunners who helped make for another terrific event on Saturday. Teens Run DC looks forward to hosting again in February; until then, happy running!

Anacostia parkrun is a GO tomorrow 20 January at 9am

Thanks to our valiant National Park Service we expect Anacostia Park to be open tomorrow in any case & our volunteers will be there to host Anacostia parkrun!

All you walkers, joggers & runners - see you at 9am tomorrow.

Start line is near 1901 Anacostia Drive - across from the Parks Police building.

See you tomorrow, 13 January, at parkrun!

What's up with this weather?!
Looks like it will be more like 33F instead of 60+ tomorrow morning, but it should still be the first Saturday morning above freezing!
See you at 9am for our next Anacostia parkrun!

Anacostia parkrun #6

Teens Run DC was thrilled to host parkrun for the second time on Saturday. As we head into the winter months, our runners have continued to substantiate TRDC’s longstanding claim that we are an all-weather program; on a chilly December morning, twenty-one TRDC youth participated in the run, along with 12 volunteers, four staff, and two board members. parkrun has provided a wonderful opportunity for the TRDC community to meet some terrific new folks, and we look forward to getting to know many more local residents and members of various DC running groups through parkrun.

As always, a special thanks to the volunteer crew: Alee Wade, Alex Bureau, Darrell Stanaford, Dave Heerema, Linda Hocker, and Steve Hocker. An extra special shout-out to Alex Bureau, who was recruited for the volunteer team on the spot; Alex successfully recorded the names of all runners without bar codes as his ungloved hands slowly froze into a state of noncompliance. (Runners: remember to bring your bar codes!) We need help this coming Saturday - so please let us know if you can volunteer.

Greg Gorman and Frank Filtreau hurried over from College Park and joined us after CP was cancelled due to ice on the course - thankful for the sunshine along our Anacostia River!

Shirley Samashima and Ian Squires both completed their 5th Anacostia parkruns and lead the growing group of parkrunners proud to call themselves Anacostia regulars. Speaking of whom, with TRDC taking care of the volunteer roles, dedicated Anacostia volunteer Jennifer Flather got a chance to run.

The fastest time of the day (21:31) was set by Ted Poulos, who has completed an amazing 55 parkruns over the past two years; Saturday was Ted’s first venture into the Anacostia parkrun scene and we hope to see him again soon. Ted was followed closely by parkrun USA Country Manager, Darrell Stanaford, in a time of 22:19. Brittney White was the first female finisher in 28:51.

Teens Run DC will be back to host again in January- we look forward to seeing you all then! And, with TRDC on holiday break from regular practices, we hope you will see some of our members at Anacostia parkrun during the coming few weeks too.

Finally, lot's of running options available on New Year's Day:  At 9am right here in Anacostia Park Mayor Bowser will be holding her Fresh Start 5K. parkrun will have a table and be spreading the word about parkrun to the community - please help us if you're available.

Also on New Year's Day, there will be a special parkrun double:  at 8:30 am Leakin Park parkrun takes place in Baltimore, followed by College Park parkrun at 10:30.

Let it snow!

Hello Anacostia parkrunners! Of course we will run tomorrow, 9 December, even if it snows. Be careful and allow extra time for travel if it is snowy.
